Green Flag: We recently had a visit from Eamon Costello from Cavan County Council in relation to our Green Flag application. The visit was a huge success with Eamon very impressed with all that was happening in the school. This is due to the great work of the Green School Committee which is driven on by the efforts of the pupils. A special word of thanks to the parents and indeed grandparents, who, as part of the committee, did such sterling work throughout the year. The school looks all the better for it and most importantly, the attitudes and behaviours of the students towards their environment is of a very positive nature.
One aspect that was pointed out to us is that tin foil is one of the largest waste components from schools. This can be cut down on by the use of lunch boxes. We are waiting to hear in the next couple of months if our application will warrant a Green Flag before the end of term. In the meantime the school will continue to foster positive attitudes.
School Self Evaluation: We are doing persuasive writing with the children this term. Also we are looking at maths for the next academic year. As part of that process we are handing out surveys to both parents and pupils with regard to different aspects of maths. We would ask that they would be filled in and returned to the office.
Parents Association: Many thanks to the Parents Association for the running of the recent Bingo. These funds are for helping reduce expenses to all parents for school tours and swimming. They are greatly appreciated and needed. They have not yet reached their target for this year but hope to do so by the end of June.
Sport: In football, Brendan McCormack has been coaching the senior infant class for the past couple of weeks. Also, football after school on a Tuesday, will be commencing on March 25th for both boys and girls from 3rd to 6th. . Swimming for all pupils from 1st to 6th will also start on Monday the 31st of March and will last for 8 weeks.
Sponsored Walk: This year’s sponsored walk will take place on Friday 28th of March. Cards will be distributed a week or two before this. This year 5th and 6th class will be doing the Muff 2K at the top of Lough an Lae on the day. More details will follow.
Seachtain na Gaeilge: This has started this week and goes on until March 14th, when classes will do a short presentation for other classes to see.
Junior Entrepreneur: Our 5th and 6th class are hard at work at their Junior Entrepreneur Project. As part of it we are writing, and hoping to sell, “A Children’s History of Muff and Kingscourt”. It has been a tough but very rewarding exercise so far. The pupils have had great help from historians, friends and family members. A special mention to all the grandparents who have helped and provided such excellent information and pictures for us.
We will be having a book launch in the school in the coming weeks which will be well advertised beforehand.
Quiz Teams: The Credit Union Regional Finals were held in the Fairways Hotel in Dundalk last Sunday 2nd March. Well done to our team of James Martin, Páidí Walsh, Jake Gillen, Aoife Reilly & Jordan Curtis, who finished in a commendable 5th place.
In the Cumann na mBunscol quiz, held in the Kilmore Hotel, our team of James Martin, Páidí Walsh, Jake Gillen & Aoife Reilly put in a great performance and came an impressive 2nd place out of 6o tables. Our two other teams of Jenny Smith, Shannen McCormack, Jordan Curtis & Abi O’Regan and junior team of Óisín Fleming, Keri McCormack, Dylan Kemp & Katie McKenna performed admirably.
Novena: The Annual Lenten Novena will begin in The Church of the Immaculate Conception Kingscourt tonight at 8pm and will continue every Wednesday until Easter. The list of guest speakers available on the Parish website. Of particular interest is Mrs Elma Walsh mother of Donal Walsh RIP. Her talk will be of interest to pupils as it is with regard to “Teenagers; Spirituality & Living Life.”
