Laragh Muff N.S. Newsletter December 2013

This year our enrolment week will once again take place in January running from Monday the 13th to Friday the 17th of the month. Enrolment forms must be returned by Friday the 17th of January at 3:00 for an enrolment to be valid. Forms can be picked up that week from the office or indeed downloaded from our website at

Sacramental Classes:  The annual Giving Christmas Mass takes place on Saturday the 14th of December at 7:30 p.m. Pupils are asked to bring in non- perishable items on the night for donation. Pupils from 2nd and 6th class are obliged to attend.

Below is a reminder of when the sacraments take place this year.

First Holy Communion – Saturday 17th May 2014, 11:00 Muff Church.
Confirmation – Sunday 25th May, Kingscourt Church.

There will be other masses in the New Year that Fr. Gerry will let us know about in due course.

School Office:  Please note that Gillian is in the office on a Monday, Wednesday & Thursday.  On Tuesday and Friday a message can be left on the phone.   Also if a parent/visitor comes to the school during the school day, they must check in at the office.  If the office is empty, please ring the bell at the front door and wait for a teacher to come to them.

Attendance:   Good attendance plays an important role in a child’s educational development. The attendance this year has once again been excellent with an average of 97 -98% attendance. In the event of an absence, a note must be furnished. However, if a child is sick the child should be kept at home. It can happen that an ill child is sent into school having had medicine that morning only for the medicine to wear off by lunch time. This then requires the child to be sent home.  This increases the chances of sickness spreading throughout the school.  Also if a child is leaving early for any reason, they must be signed out at the office.

Anti – Bullying Policy:   Our new draft policy will be available on the website We would encourage parents to read through this. A copy is also with the Parents Association at the moment.

Green Flag:   Our Green School Committee has been very busy over the past number of weeks preparing to send in our Green Flag application to the council for perusal. The next step is a visit from a member from the council to inspect the school’s work. Congratulations to Rang a 4 who won the prize for greenest class with their recycling and to Páidí and Mary Walsh who won the individual prize. We are now recycling ink cartridges and have bought a new compost bin as well. You will also find attached our Green Newsletter composed by the students of 5th and 6th.  3rd and 4th class had a very informative and enjoyable trip to the recycling centre in Carrick recently.

Christmas Season:   All classes will be invited to watch the Padraic McIntyre production on Tuesday the 17th of December in the school. This year he is directing a performance of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The cost is €5 per child.

Also some of the classes will be putting on performances for parents to come and watch. Below is a timetable of when they are on:

Junior Infants: Monday December 16th at 1:30.
Senior Infants/1st: Wednesday 18th December at 1:20.
1st/2nd: Thursday December 19th at 11:30.
5th/6th: Thursday December 19th at 2:00.

More details of all the above will be given closer to the time.

Parent/Teacher Meetings:   Many thanks to all the parents who attended all the recent P/T meetings. We once again had 100% attendance and both evenings ran smoothly.

Parents Association:   There will be a cake sale this Saturday evening after 7:30 mass in Muff. All are welcome. Anybody who has baked cakes or buns can leave them in the school hall from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Please find attached note from PA.  Also the Christmas Cards organised by the PA was a great success.  Well done to all involved.  Many thanks to the parents who helped man the stall at the Christmas Fair.

School Self Evaluation:   We are currently wrapping up our recount writing and we will have some samples for the website in due course. We are also beginning to assemble data for our maths plan. This will include questionnaires for parents and pupils which will be delivered in the next term.
