Dun-An-Ri Forest Park, in urgent need of Attention.
In the Heritage Guide to the Cavan – Monaghan region, it states “Dun-An-Ri Forest Park” on the outskirts of Kingscourt, is perhaps one of the best kept secrets of Co. Cavan, indeed in Ireland as a whole. It is far more than a forest park, as it contains expanses of lawn and shrubbery. The trees are the most important feature in the park, it contains specimen shrubs and trees from all over the world. The park also contains many delightful walks also has a special walk which is suitable for wheelchairs, there is a special area suitable for picnics , car-parking , with toilets, in the same area, The park is controlled by Coillte since 1969, sadly it is not being maintained as it had been in recent years.
Last January 2014 following gale force winds in many areas of the forest trees have been blown down, the children’s paddling pool is one very popular area for parents and children, but alas large trees have been knocked in the pool area and it not possible to use as intended, The Forest Parks toilets are in urgent need of painting and cleaning.. There have been complaints from many visitors to the park at the lack of maintenance . It is 5 months since the wind storm knocked the trees. and nothing has been done to remove them, at this time of year the park attracts lots of visitors from all over Ireland, England , Europe ( recently it was visited by a group of German Students also Swiss visitors) Since the retirement of the last employee of Coillte in the park, the cutting of the lawn areas have let to contractors from outside the area, it is vital and important that the lawns are cut on a regular basis, at the moment they need to be cut badly.
