The  announcement  by  Mr. Ruaire Quinn, Minister for Education during the past week  of  nine  new post – primary  schools which will open in 2015 and 2016  are needed to cope with the surge in student numbers .  Kingscourt’s   new  secondary  school  is top of the list with a projected  number of students  400/500. The  Department of Education and Skills have confirmed that the Second- level School in Kingscourt  will be  under the patronage of Cavan – Monaghan  Education and Training Board ( the new body  comprising  of Counties Cavan and Monaghan  VECs)  The  news  has been welcomed  enthusiastically   by parents and all in the wider  Kingscourt region and   will be  a great boost  for future development in the area.   The campaign for a second level school for Kingscourt has been ongoing for the past  50 years. Mr. Clifford Kelly was instrumental in the campaign for a new school in Kingscourt during his time as Chairperson of Co. Cavan VEC . That work resulted in, funding from the Department of Education for the purchase of an 8 acre site.

A decision in March 2009  to approve the provision of a school in Kingscourt by the then Minister for Education Mr. Batt O’Keefe, T.D. for 400- 500 students.  The inclusion of the school in the School Building Programme in January 2011 enabled the  VEC to commence  detailed planning.  Following those developments  Clifford Kelly and others working along with the CEO and Officials from Cavan – Monaghan Education and Training Board have engaged in detailed work meeting with Principals of 13 local  primary schools and the Managers of 5 Creches/ Playgroups in relation to the development of the new school. Clifford Kelly  highlighted the vital role of Mr. Martin O’Brien, CEO, Cavan- Monaghan  Education and Training Board in the continuing advancement of this project through his work with the Department of Education in securing the patronage of the Kingscourt school and also his engagement with Department Officials on all aspects of the project.
