The Late Mary Farrelly (nee Curtis);

There was genuine regret in the area at the passing of Mary Farrely (nee Curtis) on Good Friday. Formerly resident at Cornavan, Kingscourt, for the last few years Mary had resided at Castleross Nursing Home, Carrickmacross, where she received great care and respect from all the staff. Mary celebrated her 91 st. birthday recently and although she struggled with dementia in the last few years, she still fondly recalled her family and child hood friends in Coravelis , Bailieboro. At the age of 16 , like many of her generation, she emigrated to England. She trained first in general nursing and later in midwifery. Upon returning to Ireland in the 1950’s, Mary worked in both Athlone and Dublin as a District Nurse. She married Hugh Farrelly of Leiter, Kingscourt in 1953 and they settled on a farm in Cornavan, Kingscourt, where they reared their family. Mary was a keen gardener, a great cook and an excellent seamstress and her house was always open to friends and neighbours. In later years when her family was reared, Mary took the opportunity to travel, visiting Canada, Florida ,Zambia and Great Britain. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh in 2000.Dearly missed by her loving children, Kathleen, Maura, Loretta, Angela, Elizabeth ,Anne , Helen , Michael and Philip, sons-in-law, daughters-in -law, grandchildren, and great – granddaughter , sisters-in-law, nephews , nieces , relative and friends. There was a large and representative attendance at the removal on Sunday 20 th. April to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kingscourt and at the Requiem funeral Mass on Monday 21 st. April, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, which was testament of the high esteem in which she was held, she was the last of her family.
